A Roller Door, in its simplest form, is a continuously pressed steel curtain that is attached to a series of cylindrical ‘drums’. A steel shaft with springs runs through the centre of the drums. The springs allow the door to be tensioned ensuring it is well balanced and easy to operate.
From the outside of your garage, a Roller Door will look similar to this image:
From the inside of your garage you will see something like this:
A Roller Door is mounted onto brackets that are secured to the structure of the doorway (“opening”) and vertical tracks or guides are fitted to hold the door in place on the inside of the garage.
As the Roller Door is pushed up vertically, it rolls onto itself in the space immediately above the opening.
A manually operated Roller Door is typically locked with a central lock that has horizontal locking bars which push into slots in the track.
If automation is your thing, a motor can be fitted to either the left or right end of the door, depending on access to an electrical point.
There are a number of other locking methods, but that is a whole other blog post!
A well-maintained Roller Door has a typical lifespan of 15 to 25 years.
Protect your investment and ensure your Roller Door receives regular maintenance from a garage door specialist.
